Fort Huachuca, AZ. - Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation and Sierra Cycles hit the pavement Saturday to present the "Bikes and Bands" Street Fair. On Hatfield Street between Irwin and Bissel, Families visited bike and all-terrain vehicle displays, biker and sports gears vendors and free children's activities.
The fair's main attraction was the "Brigade FMX World Wide Extreme Motorsports" featuring the "Globe of Death and BMX Freestyle Jumping." Every hour, Families watched stunt bikers and motorcyclists perform aerial tricks off a bike ramp and inside a spherical metal cage. Live entertainment also included music by the Military Intelligence Corps Band, "Counter Intelligence."
According to James Thomas, FMWR special event coordinator, while the street fair is open to the entire Fort Huachuca community, the event's targeted audience is the military student population on post.
"The purpose of holding this [event] close to students is to give them something to do," Thomas said.
Besides bringing military students and Families together with bikes, music and child-friendly activities such as a climbing wall, jumping castles, paintball and batting cages, the fair kicked off registration for "Toy Under the Tree." Sponsored by FMWR and Sierra Cycles, Family and FMWR patrons age 18 and over registered to win a 2013 Kawasaki KLX 140 ADF dirt bike.
Registration will continue at upcoming FMWR sponsored events and at Sierra Cycles through Dec. 10. The winner will be announced at this year's Night of Extraordinary Lights in Dec. 13-14. For more information on Toy Under the Tree, call 533.5642.
