WASHINGTON (Under SecArmy Public Affairs, July 23, 2013) -- Hoby F. Cupp says his promotion to lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army is the result of the enduring support from his family, friends, mentors and the extraordinary Soldiers he's been fortunate enough to serve with in both garrison and combat.
Under Secretary of the Army Joseph W. Westphal hosted the promotion ceremony and praised Cupp, his former military assistant, for his dedicated service in defense of the nation. He recognized Cupp's proven leadership as he promoted him to lieutenant colonel during a ceremony conducted before numerous family, friends and colleagues at the Pentagon on July 16.
"Promotion to lieutenant colonel is a significant milestone in our Army and represents the zenith of an outstanding military career. Hoby is one of our Army's finest officers and this promotion speaks volumes about his incredible work ethic, intellect and character," Westphal said during the ceremony.
Cupp recognized his wife, Jennifer, two children, Nolan and Brycen, and his parents, Bobby and Karen Cupp, during his remarks; presenting each of them with a special memento to signify his appreciation for their role in his life. Further highlighting that many have helped him along his journey, he also recognized the many Soldiers, and leaders, that he's worked with throughout his seventeen-year career.
"It's extremely humbling to be standing up here and I thank everyone for being here today. This promotion is possible because of the continuous support that I have received throughout my career from my family and fellow Soldiers," Cupp said after being promoted. "I truly appreciate the opportunities I've been afforded and look forward to the future."
During the ceremony, Westphal explained how the Army carefully selects its officers, and that this accomplishment is testimony to Lt. Col Cupp's leadership and his potential to serve in positions of increased responsibility.
Cupp ended the ceremony by recognizing his former colleagues in attendance for investing in his professional development and thanking Under Secretary Westphal for providing him the unique opportunity to serve as his military assistant.
"I look forward to the challenges ahead and I'm excited to have been a part of great teams throughout my career in the Army. Everywhere I've been stationed I've been a part of an Army family that looked out for each other and I'm very proud to be associated with an organization that resonates character and values taking care of its people," concluded Cupp.
Lt. Col. Cupp is a native of Sugar Land, Texas, and 1992 graduate of W.P. Clements High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering from the United States Military Academy (West Point, NY) in 1996, and recently earned a Master of Science degree in Public Policy Management from Georgetown University. Cupp was commissioned as an Army Aviation officer and has served in various command and staff positions in a number of storied Army units. He's deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan and is slated to assume command next summer of the 6th Armed Reconnaissance Squadron, 6th Cavalry ("Six-Shooters"), 10th Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, New York.
