African Land Forces Summit 2018

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

What is it?

The African Land Forces Summit is a weeklong seminar bringing together land force chiefs from across Africa for candid dialog to discuss and develop cooperative solutions and improve transregional security and stability.

Senior leaders from African nations will work on solidifing relationships, exchange information on current topics of mutual interest and encourage cooperation in addressing challenges.

The theme for this year’s summit is “Unity is Strength: Combating Africa’s Security Challenges.” The United States and the Federal Republic of Nigeria host the African Land Forces Summit 2018 in Abuja, Nigeria, April 16-19.

What is the Army doing/ has done?

The Army is committed to working with the nation’s partners and allies to share responsibility for its common defense.

For the past few decades, America has partnered with African armies in security-cooperation events that increase readiness while building partnerships between nations and the capacity to increase regional and transregional security.

U.S. Army Africa leverages its relationships across Africa to provide a venue for African leaders to discuss current and emerging issues, as well as best practices.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?

The Army will continually seek to enhance its professional relationships, training, and overall coordination with the allies and partners. U.S. Army Africa leverages the Total Army and uses a regional focus, embedded in the Army’s global engagement strategy to strengthen African land forces and regional organizations. These foundational capabilities help synchronize efforts and provide options to prevent conflict, to shape the security environment and to win conflicts. U.S. Army Africa is committed to strengthening relationships with partner nations in Africa.

U.S. Army Africa will continue to develop and build upon the established relationships and partnerships.

Why is this important to the Army?

The Army is optimizing interoperability with the nation’s allies and partners to strengthen alliances, attract new partners and deliver more effective coalition operations.

The African continent is a complex environment with over one billion people and more than 2,000 spoken languages in a continent three times the size of the U.S. The importance of building partnerships across Africa is more relevant than ever in light of the growth of regional and transnational violent extremist organizations (VEOs).

African Land Forces Summit brings together the community of land forces in Africa, and represents a unified approach to confronting regional and continental challenges such as VEOs and illicit trafficking.
