ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- An engineer who deployed to Afghanistan was named employee of the year by the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, or CERDEC, here, June 19.

Zachary Kjellberg was recognized in the technical team category for his work while deployed in Afghanistan in September 2011 for a three-month tour as a member of the Transformative Applications Team. Kjellberg serves as a computer scientist in the Command & Control Cognition Branch of CERDEC's Command, Power & Integration Directorate. He specializes in Andriod development and the use of commercial off-the-shelf software coupled with software customization to quickly meet the application needs.

While in Afghanistan, Kjellberg gave technical support to Afghanistan Combat Outpost, the Forward Operating Base Pasab and the Kandahar Airfield. The TA team worked to support the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Transformative Apps program. The program centers on applying rapidly evolving commercial smartphone and digital tablet technology to tactical military problems. Kjellberg and the TA team worked directly with soldiers to both train the soldiers to use the applications and to gain direct feedback about the apps and how they could be improved.

The other members of the Transformative Apps Support Team include Robert Beckinger and Zacharie Hall who both also deployed to Afghanistan in 2011.
