FORT HOOD--Fort Hood Warrior Transition Brigade kicked off National Nurses Week May 7 with the Blessing of the Hands ceremony, an annual ritual that honors the role of nurses in providing compassionate care to others as well as reaffirms their commitment to the nursing profession.

During the ceremony, WTB nurse case managers recited a Blessing of the Hands litany to symbolize caring hands that have healed, have ministered to the sick, have comforted the dying and have held the dead. WTB's 1st Battalion chaplain, Capt. James Pritchard, then anointed their hands with aromatic oil.

Lt. Col. Chris Cook, commander, 1st Battalion, WTB, closed the ceremony by thanking the dozen nurse case managers participating in the ceremony for their role and dedication in helping prepare WTB's wounded, ill and injured Soldiers for a hopeful future.

The backdrop for the ceremony was the new 160-room barrack facility that will open June 6 and become the new living quarters for WTB's wounded, ill and injured Soldiers.

Throughout the week, WTB nurse case managers will hold various events, including a brigade-wide walk-run, a zumba fitness dance and a cake-cutting ceremony. National Nurses Week is May 6-12.
