FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. -- The Exceptional Family Member Program of Army Community Service has kicked off a "Parenting with Love and Logic" course for the Fort Leonard Wood community.

The program began Tuesday with an introduction, but Jane Bruns, EFMP systems navigator, encourages people to sign up for the class and join in as class members will begin to dig deep into the material on April 10.

"Love and Logic is a parenting program that focuses on parents keeping their cool, staying calm, letting consequences do the teaching while having empathy for the child as they experience the consequences of their choices. The goal is to have a child who is prepared for the 'real world' by practicing decision making while the cost of mistakes is low," Bruns said.

Bruns said the program is led by a facilitator and includes video presentations.

"Parents will receive a parent handbook and will be encouraged to share experiences.

Childcare is also available on-site. Parents can sign up for the class and childcare through ACS EFMP. To utilize the childcare, children must be registered with Child, Youth and School Services," she said.

"The program does not require any fancy equipment, is easy to implement and doesn't require homework, other than practicing skills learned. Once parents embrace the skills and begin implementing them, most discover a change in their stress levels. Parents also need to remember there are no magic formulas," Bruns said.

The class is open to anyone and is applicable to all children; however, the focus will be Families who have children with special needs (behavioral or medical).

"This program works, but it takes practice and consistent implementation for parents to see results," Bruns said.

Training is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays through May 15 at the ACS building. Parents are encouraged to sign up before Tuesday's class. To register, call ACS EFMP at 596.0212 or email jane.bruns1@us.army.mil.
