FORT STEWART, Ga. - Troopers from 3rd Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, also known for being cavalryman, horseman, troopers, or its historical nickname "Garryowen," are focusing their efforts on an important new mission during 2012, which will honor all former 3-7th CAV Troopers who have gallantly served and put themselves in harm's way.
"We would like to have our wounded vets from Iraq attend some of our training events such as our Garryowen day, and our Spur Ride, so they could talk to our young troopers and impart their wisdom and experience to them," said Lt. Col. Lance C. Varney, commander, 3-7 CAV.
"Remembering the past traditions and accomplishments of the regiment provide Soldiers and leaders with a tangible link to past glories," said Lt. Col Varney. "We draw power from our vets and their service."
Prior to the Squadron's redeployment in October 2009, they had conducted over 3,000 combat patrols throughout Northern Iraq and Mosul.
"Some of the significant heroes who served during that first day of Iraqi Freedom, March 20 2003 were five Troopers from the squadron, Capt. McCoy, Sgt. First Class Broadhead, Sgt. First Class Wheatley, Staff Sgt. Parson, and Staff Sgt. Johnson, each whom earned The Silver Star," said Lt. Col. Varney.
The 3-7 CAV is part of the proud Cavalry lineage and history that we want to recognize, stated 3-7 CAV, Unit Public Affairs Representative, 1st Lt. Leighton Cornish.
In reuniting with our past, Soldiers receive a sense of belonging to something greater than themselves and it raises the espirit de corps across the Squadron said Lt. Col. Varney.
Anyone that has or knows someone that has gallantly served and deployed with the Squadron beginning on March 20, 2003 to the present should contact 1st Lt. Leighton Cornish, the 3-7 CAV, Unit Public Affairs Representative at email leighton.cornish@us.army.mil. "Garryowen!"
