Col. Sullivan: Enjoy a safe Fourth of July

By Col. Timothy Sullivan, commander Anniston Army DepotJune 23, 2011

Anniston Army Depot, Ala. - The Fourth of July holiday period is just a few weeks away. Founded July 4, 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we will celebrate our nation’s 235th birthday this year

While a large portion of the depot will focus on preventive maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery, many of you will enjoy some much needed time off.

I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Whether your plans are to host a cookout, attend fireworks, take to the water or simply rest and relax, think safety. Don’t forget the risks that may be mixed in with fun.

Remember to inspect the grill before firing it up, supervise children when near or using fireworks, wear life vests when boating, buckle up when in automobiles, obey the speed limit, don’t be distracted by electronic devices and don’t drink and drive. These simple acts could save a life.

The skills you employ and the work that you perform on a daily basis is critical. Our customer " the warfighter " is depending on us to supply our military with the equipment needed while standing in defense of our nation. It is holidays like these that commemorate the freedoms and independence we share as Americans.

As we celebrate our independence and freedom on July 4, let us always remember that freedom isn’t free. It was bought at a very high price.

From the Sullivan family to yours " enjoy your time off and look out for one another. We’ll see you on the 11th!
