In the bag: Summer Bagger Program provides students practical work experience

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (May 26, 2011) - For many youths, summer break is an opportunity to make a temporary transition from student to employee, gain practical hands-on experience in the work world and, of course, earn extra spending money.

For those students who have not yet secured a summer job, the garrison's Summer Bagger Program may be exactly what they are looking for to enhance their summer schedule.

Baggers have the opportunity to work up to two days a week at the Fort Meade Commissary, bagging groceries and providing carryout services to patrons.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, qualifying summer work program candidates -- active-duty dependents ages 14 to 18 years old -- will receive priority scheduling for the weekday shift from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. As independent contractors, the position offers participants earning opportunities by way of tips for bagging services rendered.

One of the attractive features of the Summer Bagger Program is the opportunity to retain a position during the school year. Although priority scheduling does not apply after Labor Day, participants can work with the head bagger to adjust their schedules when school is in session.

Badge registration for the program will be held May 31 and June 7, 14 and 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Fort Meade Public Affairs Office, 4409 Llewellyn Ave.
