PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. -- Two Army labs agreed at a ceremony here Nov. 9 to channel brainpower from both organizations into a joint initiative to benefit warfighters.
David Castellano, executive director of the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center's (ARDEC) Weapons and Software Engineering Center, and Panagiotis "Pete" Glikerdas, acting director of the Communications Electronics Research Development and Engineering Center's (CERDEC) Command and Control Directorate, based at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., signed a memorandum of understanding between the two organizations.
The memorandum of understanding establishes a flexible framework to plan joint efforts and assign resources, leading ultimately to technology demonstrations. The agreement's annex also identifies an initial project that combines several pioneering efforts being developed at both labs into a more robust combined effort.
The initial project to be developed under the memorandum is known as Targetview, which is an integration effort combining three projects:
Aca,!Ac Command and Control Multi-touch Enabled Technology (COMET) is a multi-touch visualization surface developed by the CERDEC Command and Control Directorate (C2D) that provides commanders and planners the capability to interact with computer simulations of familiar analog planning tools, such as maps and acetate overlays.
Aca,!Ac Firestorm is a tactical, fire-control tool developed at the ARDEC Weapons and Software Engineering Center (WSEC) that provides Soldiers the ability to perform "weapon target pairing," used to describe how military assets on the battlefield are visualized and selected in response to threats and other mission requirements.
Aca,!Ac Picatinny Optical Detection System is a hand-held digital optical detection system developed by the ARDEC that helps Soldiers detect optical devices, such as in binoculars and rifle scopes, that may be in use by enemy fighters.
