REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala.Aca,!"Lt. Gen. Kevin T. Campbell, commanding general of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (USASMDC/ARSTRAT), hosted a town hall meeting at the Bob Jones Auditorium in the Sparkman Center here on Jan. 21. The town hall was open to all USASMDC/ARSTRAT employees and available via video teleconference to employees at Colorado Springs, Colo.; Kwajalein Atoll; Fort Greely, Alaska; and the High Energy Laser Systems Test Facility (HELSTF) at White Sands Missile Range, N.M.
After a riveting video showing different projects and events which took place during CampbellAca,!a,,cs time with the command, time of service awards were distributed. Campbell then recognized two Honorable Order of Saint Barbara Awardees, Pamela G. Mitchell and Ivan S. Romero.
One of the major topics that Campbell spoke on throughout the town hall was the development of leaders, particularly concerning civilian education. He introduced the recently established Workforce Development Branch of G3 and encouraged everyone to inquire about opportunities and apply when appropriate. He stated that he believes Aca,!A"civilian education is a benefit not only to the individual but also to the organization.Aca,!A?
Campbell pointed out efforts to bring young people into the command for workforce development as well, including the construction of the Concept Analysis Lab, which he called Aca,!A"an attractive environment to bring in youth and have them work on interesting projects.Aca,!A? He stressed how vital this was to develop future employees. He also introduced G8 interns and co-ops, who currently make up 16 percent of the G-8 workforce.
The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is another thing the CG was very passionate about, praising employees for donating to Aca,!A"deserving organizations that help families and communities.Aca,!A? Each of the USASMDC/ARSTRAT group contributors exceeded their goals. Kwajalein was recognized in particular for their efforts, as they reached an astounding 359 percent of their goal.
Campbell acknowledged deployments from Army Space Support Teams and the Army Space Coordination Element, along with thanking the deployed Commercial Imagery Teams for providing forcesAca,!"both ours and alliesAca,!"with necessary information when deployed.
Kwajalein personnel were recognized in their great efforts to maintain good relations with the host nation, the coordination of the reverse osmosis water purification unit team after a natural disaster lead to contaminated water, efforts in identifying a space object that allowed astronauts on the international space station to proceed with operations, and for its fiber cable system project. The range was also acknowledged for its continual support to testing, including support to the Flight Test Ground-based Missile Defense (FTG) launch scheduled for the end of this month.
Personnel from Fort Greely were acknowledged, as were the program managers for Kestrel Eye, Vertical/horizontal Integration of Space Technologies and Applications (VISTA), and Work Center Interface/Computer Network Defense Portable Boundary System. Campbell acknowledged the activation of the Wideband Global SATCOM 2 (WGS 2) in August and the successful launch of WGS 3 in December.
Catching employees up-to-speed on questions that arose at the last town hall meeting, Campbell said that there was no decision yet about the commandAca,!a,,cs role as the Army Service Component Command to US CYBERCOM, but did state that we were one of the four options. He also let employees know that due to the results of the supply room survey, we will be getting a limited supply room within the building.
The National Security Personnel System (NSPS) was discussed, both the pay pool statistics from 2009 and the conversion out timeline for this upcoming year. Because overall employees throughout the Department of Defense were unsatisfied with NSPS, the GS system will be the standard once again.
Force protection was addressed, on both external and internal threats. After showing a list of key indicators for insider threats, Campbell asked employees to Aca,!A"be conscience of these internal threats. Apply common sense, and if you see these things, report on it. ItAca,!a,,cs the nature of the threat in this day and age, that we must take necessary steps to protect us from us.Aca,!A?
The town hall ended with Campbell answering questions from the audience that included improving the efficiency of the help desk and more information on civilian education opportunities for all GS levels.
