FORT RUCKER, Ala. ─ With blazing summer temperatures giving way to rapidly dropping mercury, frost and slick roads, the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center will roll out its annual autumn and winter safety campaign in early October with the theme "Be Aware, Prepare, Take Care!" to help Soldiers, civilians and families manage seasonal risks.
The campaign, scheduled to run through March, will provide tools and products focusing on important seasonally appropriate safety topics to help all members of the Army Family counter potential hazards as cold weather arrives.
Cooler temperatures pose persistent challenges, including driving in adverse weather conditions and increased personal risk when outdoors. From fiscal years 2021-2025, the Army lost an average of 33 Soldiers per year in the October-March time frame.
The campaign includes posters, feature articles, videos and public service announcements focusing on seasonal safety topics, such as driving safely in wintry conditions, preventing cold-weather injuries, keeping homes safe and more.
“Our mission readiness hinges on the vigilance and deliberate risk management of our Soldiers, civilians and their families," said Brig. Gen. John Curry, USACRC commanding general. "Seasonal transitions bring unique environmental hazards – whether on the training ground, the highway or at home. 'Be Aware, Prepare, Take Care!' is an operational mindset. When we actively identify risks, plan ahead for unpredictable weather and look out for one another, we preserve the combat power essential to defending our nation."
USACRC officials encourage users to visit the organization’s website frequently for safety materials, as they will be released throughout autumn and winter.
"The campaign gives our NCOs and first-line leaders the resources they need to keep Soldiers safe, but leadership is what turns awareness into action," said USACRC Command Sgt. Maj. Sherwyn Steve Gibbs. "Whether conducting operations in cold weather or traveling over the holidays, disciplined decision-making matters. Leaders must live the standard every day, look out for their teammates and ensure no one cuts corners when seasonal hazards arise."
The campaign will be available on the USACRC’s website at https://safety.army.mil.
