Progress continues on Tobyhanna Army Depot’s new army family housing development, with the project now firmly in the vertical construction phase and multiple trades actively working across the site.
First announced in 2023, the Cadence Communities at Tobyhanna project will provide 35 new homes designed to support warfighters and their families assigned to the installation. Following months of major site development and civil infrastructure work, the project has reached a significant milestone as construction shifts toward foundations, utilities and framing.
Civil infrastructure is now substantially complete, allowing construction crews to concentrate on building the homes themselves. Framing has begun on two building pads, with additional pads scheduled to progress in sequence as construction continues.
The development will ultimately feature 17 duplex-style buildings totaling 35 new homes. The community will include 19 four-bedroom homes and 16 three-bedroom homes, each with two-and-a-half bathrooms. One four-bedroom home will be a standalone residence designed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility requirements.
The project is currently projected for completion during the first quarter of calendar year 2027, a timeline that falls in line with the previously forecasted closing date.
As construction progresses, the development is also beginning to take shape as a new residential community on the installation. The roadway that runs through the neighborhood has been named Radio Way, adding another connection to Tobyhanna’s history and mission.
The continued development of the housing project represents an investment in the quality of life of military families stationed at Tobyhanna and supports the installation’s broader mission of answering the nation’s call and maintaining ready and modern assets for the warfighters that serve our country.
Depot Commander Col. Benjamin L. Kilgore expressed excitement about the future of the project and the opportunities it presents for military families.
“Seeing this project move from site development into vertical construction is an exciting milestone for Tobyhanna Army Depot," said Col. Kilgore. "This new housing represents a significant investment in our military families and strengthens our ability to support the warfighters who serve here. As the homes begin to take shape, we’re one step closer to delivering a modern community that reflects our commitment to our people and the future of this installation.”
With civil work largely behind the project and framing now underway, the transformation of the site is becoming increasingly visible. Construction will continue to progress across the remaining building pads in the months ahead as Tobyhanna moves closer to welcoming military families into their new homes.
The new housing community will provide modern living spaces while strengthening Tobyhanna Army Depot’s ability to support warfighters and their families in Northeast Pennsylvania.
Depot Sgt. Maj. Cory P Alkire echoed Col. Kilgore's sentiment, emphasizing the impact that the expanded housing will have on warfighters and their families.
"The warfighter on the front lines, whether in garrison, training, or deployed always depends on the support and structure of the most important investment they fight for: their families. Knowing that those who support them are safe and secure at home lightens the load they carry in the backpack no one can see," said Sgt. Maj. Alkire. "Now that vertical construction has begun, we are one step closer to providing our local community with a new, amazing resource their families can enjoy for decades to come. It’s one more reason I am proud to call TYAD home, as soon will many new families as they join our community."
Tobyhanna Army Depot is designated as the Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, electronics, avionics, and missile guidance and control. TYAD provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support through depot-level repair, systems integration, software and cyber engineering, and field support.
A key enabler of operational readiness for joint and allied forces globally, TYAD leverages new and emerging technologies to further expand the Department of War’s organic capabilities for microelectronics, secure communications infrastructure, unmanned aerial systems, joint all-domain command and control, integrated air and missile defense and the Army’s Next Generation Combat Systems.
TYAD’s ability to rapidly surge production, deploy field support teams and scale for contingency or theater-level operations makes it a vital contributor to strategic readiness and operational reach.
