First Army leaders and staff welcomed the Secretary of the Army, Honorable Dan Driscoll, to First Army headquarters on June 30 for an overview of First Army’s mission and its crucial role in working with Army National Guard and Army Reserve.
First Army Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Mark Landes, touched on such topics as Reserve Component functions, training considerations for counter-unmanned aerial systems, and Army digitization.
Landes also highlighted that while the Army National Guard resembles Active Duty, the Army Reserve operates with a different structure and with different capabilities that are essential for the Total Force, such as medical and legal.
The vital contributions of OC/Ts were also addressed, with Landes noting that they work with partnered units throughout the entire notification, training, mobilization, and deployment processes. Also touched on areas where First Army is helping enable Total Force readiness, such as: OC/T training, synthetic training environments, and mission command information systems.
First Army’s Chief Data Officer, Lt. Col. Melissa Sayers, presented an overview of Blue Pane, which prompted the Secretary to invite her to the Pentagon to further discuss the Army’s way forward on data-driven plans and operations.
On another topic, Driscoll and Landes discussed the importance and complexity of (re)constitution and the potential benefits of an updated National Mobilization Exercise.
By addressing these issues in an interactive session, First Army leaders and staff were able to present the Secretary with a clear vision of the crucial role played by First Army and its Reserve Component partners in maintaining readiness and increasing lethality and operability.
