WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGE, N.M. - The U.S. Army’s capabilities in Electromagnetic Warfare (EW) are advancing, thanks to the dedication and expertise of professionals like Hugo Curiel, Computer Scientist, U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Developmental Command (DEVCOM) Analysis Center (DAC). His recent recognition with the prestigious Army Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Award highlights not only his contributions but also the vital role the DEVCOM Analysis Center plays in supporting warfighters through advanced analytical tools and methodologies.
“I am very humbled to have received this award and would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the diligent DAC EW study team,” Curiel said. “I would also like to put a spotlight on the importance of Electromagnetic Warfare. Consideration of the electromagnetic spectrum as a battlefield domain has been somewhat stagnant over the past few decades. However, EW resurgence is becoming more apparent as we face contested and congested spectrum environments.”
Curiel underscored the value of modeling and simulation in addressing these challenges.
“The use of modeling and simulation allows DAC analysts to visually represent and inform stakeholders on a topic not easily understood,” he said. “However, subject matter and field expertise provides vital insights that go beyond models and equations to deliver concrete answers concerning complex systems operating in multifaceted environments.”
Empowering the Army Through EW Analysis
The work conducted by DEVCOM Analysis Center in Electromagnetic Warfare analysis is critical to enhancing Army capabilities. EW involves detecting, interpreting and disrupting enemy emissions while simultaneously protecting friendly forces from similar threats. The impact of Curiel’s efforts is evident in the enhancements he has made to the Sage analytical tool, which improves the Army’s ability to visualize system performance by incorporating critical terrain considerations into EW analysis.
Through these enhancements, DEVCOM Analysis Center has provided rigorous technical analysis, ensuring that system performance evaluations remain relevant to real-world operations. The improved version of Sage has already been instrumental in high-level studies. Additionally, Curiel’s work has strengthened the Army’s ability to evaluate vulnerabilities in U.S. systems against potential adversary threats.
The Role of Sage in Advancing Army Capabilities
Sage is an accredited U.S. Army analytic tool designed to support wireless communication analysis for experimentation and field events. Through interactive simulation and visualization, Sage models Radio Frequency (RF) signal performance and assesses emitter placement and effectiveness. While primarily a laboratory tool, Sage can also enhance situational awareness in prescribed scenarios, providing invaluable insights into the performance of RF systems in environments worldwide.
The enhancements to Sage made by the team and Curiel will have lasting impacts on the Army’s ability to evaluate, assess and experiment with EW systems. By integrating terrain effects into analysis, DEVCOM Analysis Center is ensuring that commanders and acquisition leaders have the data needed to make informed decisions that enhance soldier lethality and survivability.
DAC: A Unique and Essential Contributor to Army Modernization
“Hugo Curiel’s award is a testament to the expertise, innovation and dedication of the DEVCOM Analysis Center team. His work exemplifies the crucial role that advanced analytics and subject matter expertise play in strengthening the Army’s EW capabilities. As the battlefield evolves, DAC remains at the forefront, ensuring that the Army stays ahead of emerging threats and continues to provide soldiers with the technological edge they need to succeed,” said Rudy Montoya, Branch Chief, DAC.
The work at the DEVCOM Analysis Center is distinguished by its ability to combine cutting-edge modeling and simulation with deep operational and technical expertise. DAC’s approach ensures that the Army is not only prepared for the challenges of today’s battlefield but is also anticipating and adapting to future threats in the electromagnetic spectrum. The ability to conduct high-fidelity analysis with tools like Sage exemplifies DAC’s mission to provide actionable insights that drive transformation and operational effectiveness.
