REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – The Army’s sustainment leaders gathered Sept. 11-12 to establish common understanding within the sustainment community and to drive enduring change into the future.
The Commanders Forum, hosted by Army Materiel Command, brought together AMC headquarters primary staff, command teams from AMC’s major subordinate organizations, and leaders from Army G-4 and the Combined Arms Support Command with the goal of tackling a series of questions regarding the future of the sustainment enterprise. It was the first chance for sustainment leadership to convene all together since seven of AMC’s 10 major subordinate commanders changed command over the last year.
“Our challenge for the next two days is to satisfy the targets of today and stay focused on the future” Lt. Gen. Chris Mohan, AMC deputy commanding general and acting commander, said to kick off the forum. Mohan briefed the commanders on key initiatives currently having a positive impact on the Army, including Rapid Removal of Excess, Rapid Return of Organizational Clothing and Individual Equipment and the ongoing Operational Readiness program.
This forum’s theme was “driving enduring change to deliver ready combat formations” and focused heavily on how the sustainment community can operate through a warfighting lens and support the people, readiness and modernization of the Total Army.
“Sustainment is at the tip of the spear for all of the hard things we’re doing in the Army,” Command Sgt. Maj. Jimmy Sellers, AMC command sergeant major, told the audience of general officers, senior executive servants and support staff.
Uniformed and civilian leaders spent two days focusing on precision sustainment, resourcing and analytics and artificial intelligence. This agenda builds on last year’s forum, which defined “delivering ready combat formations” and tasked tangible actions that could have near- and long-term impacts to people, readiness and modernization.
“We’re broadening the horizon of the Commanders Forum because we’re all in this together,” Mohan said while discussing upcoming changes to resourcing. He challenged attendees to find creative solutions to budget problems that will impact the entire sustainment community and help leaders set conditions for the coming fiscal years.
After two days of briefings and working groups, the forum culminated in awards and recognitions for sustainers, which included members of AMC’s Best Squad, unit awards for maintenance excellence, 2023 Dellamonica Awards recipients and challenge coins for attendees of the forum who made a significant impact on its effectiveness.
“It’s important that we end the week by recognizing the people who have excelled and worked hard to help us deliver ready combat formations to the Army,” Mohan said. “Sustainment and logistics make strategy a reality.”
