
FORT KNOX, Ky. — Fort Knox officials, in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, will conduct the post’s Patriot Day ceremony to honor the victims of 9/11 and the Soldiers who served in defense of America following the attack at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-Central beginning at 8:15 a.m. Sept. 11.
Marking the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist hijackings of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 that crashed into the World Trade Center buildings, American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, the event will feature a ceremonial tolling of the Fort Knox Fire Station bell, wreath laying, 21-gun artillery salute, and the playing of taps.
Major Gen. Johnny Davis, commanding general of U.S. Army Recruiting Command and Fort Knox, will be the keynote speaker. Davis was in 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) when Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. He and his Soldiers participated in the search and rescue efforts.
Whitney Allen, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs will provide the welcome address.
