Amidst the humid, thick jungles of Oahu, Air defenders braved a competition that tested their mental and physical endurance to the limits, demonstrating their highly trained, disciplined, and fit cohesive teams. Six squads competed in scenarios that were not just challenging but also remarkably realistic, resembling the demanding challenges faced by Soldiers in the Indo-Pacific theater.
The 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command hosted its annual Best Squad Competition, drawing participation from six air defender squads across the Pacific, May 26-31. The competition tested the squads in various demanding scenarios to determine the finest Air Defenders.
“The best squad competition does more than just identify the top squad. It provides top-notch training, mixed with some adversity that each Soldier must work through!,” said 94th AAMDC Command Sgt. Maj. Kelly Hart. “These lessons learned will make them better leaders today, tomorrow, and for our future generations of Soldiers.”
The competition featured a series of challenging events designed to assess the squads' capabilities in multiple areas critical to military operations. These included army combat fitness tests, weapons qualification, providing first aid in a contaminated environment, calling for indirect fires, a 12-mile ruck march, general Army knowledge-based exams, and an assessment panel with senior Air Defenders Noncommissioned Officers. Each squad faced grueling obstacles that required not only individual prowess but also impeccable teamwork and unity.
While individual skills were essential, the Best Squad Competition primarily emphasized teamwork and camaraderie. The squads had to rely on each other’s strengths and work cohesively to overcome each challenge. This aspect of the competition fostered a spirit of unity and highlighted the importance of mutual trust and support within military units.
The 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Task Force Talon - 38th ADA Brigade, the 1-1 ADA Air Defense Artillery, the Guam National Guard, and the 94th AAMDC Headquarters all showcased their elite capabilities throughout the competition. Each unit brought unique strengths and demonstrated the high standards maintained across the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command.
The 94th AAMDC’s BSC culminated at Sea Dragon Field in front of the headquarters, where the competitors were recognized for their tenacious fortitude. Two squads were selected as 1st Place and Runner-Up. The winning team will compete at the next higher echelon at the U.S. Army Pacific level, where the Air Defenders will meet the best of the best across the Pacific. The squads carry forward the pride of their respective units and the knowledge that they were part of a distinguished tradition of military excellence.
