FORT CARSON, Colo. — Two 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Soldiers received kudos and Exchange gift cards Aug. 23, 2023, for taking top honors in the inaugural Fort Carson Barracks Room Competition.

Fort Carson Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Jason R. Mortensen and 3rd ABCT leadership recognized Pfc. Brianna Itulauifi, 588th Brigade Engineer Battalion, and Spc. Samuel Harton, 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, for finishing first and second, respectively.

“I was really stunned,”

Itulauifi said when she learned about her room winning the competition. “I really didn’t expect to receive this achievement. I’d say do everything with your heart.”

Directorate of Public Works (DPW) launched the competition to improve quality of life for Soldiers.

“This is a great opportunity for lower enlisted single Soldiers living in the barracks to compete and have pride in their living space,” said Cesar Bueno, DPW Housing Division, who developed the competition. “Our intent as the unaccompanied housing managers is to provide a friendly, monthly barracks room competition.”

The quarterly DPW Housing Division-sponsored contest is open to all Soldiers living in Fort Carson barracks. Soldiers interested in competing simply submit photos of their rooms. Once photos are reviewed and the top 10 are selected, DPW Housing Division staff sets up a time with the Soldiers to evaluate the rooms and choose the finalists.

Criteria for the competition isn’t just about how nicely a room is decorated. A comprehensive checklist is used to evaluate how well Soldiers maintain their rooms, including cleanliness and if they are submitting service orders for repair when needed, Bueno said. All furnishings are looked at to ensure they are clean and serviceable.

The next barracks competition will be held Sept. 11-15. Details will be disseminated to Soldiers living in barracks through leadership channels, quarterly command sergeants major stakeholders meeting, monthly DPW facility management classes and through DPW Housing Division Community Life NCOs.
