BRANDENBURG, Ky. – Fort Knox area motorists traveling through Meade County, Kentucky will see a new sign honoring a local Gold Star Family’s fallen Soldier on the Brandenburg Bypass.
A ceremony was held Dec. 10 at the Brandenburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11404 to rename a portion of state Highway 1638 the Maj. Michael L. Mundell Memorial Highway. Mundell was killed in Iraq in 2007 while serving with 108th Training Division.

Many of his Family members were in attendance at the unveiling.
“I know that Michael would be quite surprised by this because he always told me, ‘This is my job,’” said Mundell’s wife Audrey. “He was very proud of his job and proud to be a Soldier. Anyone who knew him knew this: this was his calling in life.”

In addition to the Mundell Family, Kentucky state Rep. Nancy Tate, Kentucky Regional Development Alliance President Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Jim Iaccoca and guest speaker Commanding General of Army Reserve Aviation Command Brig. Gen Roger Deon attended the ceremony. Deon said the dedication of the highway shows remembrance of Mundell, as well as all those who serve:
“It provides a sign to the community as a reminder of service and sacrifice.”
