Electric Vehicles at Dugway Proving Ground

DUGWAY PROVING GROUND, Utah – When you think of a military vehicle you probably think of a Stryker, M1 Abrams or an M3A3 Bradley. Along with those combat vehicles, the Army also uses less-lethal variants. While the Army is exploring the possibility of electric and hybrid vehicles in the field, fleet vehicles on bases are already seeing an upgrade.

The newest vehicles at Dugway Proving Ground are four Ford F-150 Lightnings, electric trucks with a 230-mile range on the standard battery that can reach an 80% charge in under 45 minutes using a fast charger. The trucks can carry over 2,200 pounds and tow up to 7,700 pounds. They’re pretty quick too, Ford says the EV F-150 can go 0 to 60 in under four seconds.

Col. Brian Hoffman and Command Sgt. Maj. Mauvet Rawls recently took one of the four new electric trucks out for a test drive. The trucks will be used to gauge the practicality of using electric vehicles at the base. There are already two electric vehicle charging stations at Dugway, with more planned for the future.
