FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz., -- It is not every day that Department of the Army (DA) civilians retire with more than three decades of federal service. However, this month Ms. Jeanna Garland, Network Enterprise Technology Command (NETCOM) Supervisory IT Specialist retired with 36 years as she celebrated her career achievements with coworkers and peers at her retirement ceremony last week.
Garland received her retirement certificate and other recognitions during the retirement ceremony in the command’s headquarters, December 16. Presiding over the ceremony and guest speaker was Mr. Patrick Dedham, Deputy to the Commanding General and the command’s senior civilian. Also joining and speaking at the event via video was former NETCOM CG and the current Army G6, LTG John B. Morrison Jr.
Garland worked as a DA civilian for 36 years and 6 months spending her last 27 years at NETCOM.
Her jobs at NETCOM included working as a Management Support Assistant, Telecommunications Specialist, Information Technology Specialist, then culminated her career as a Supervisory Information Technology Specialist retiring as the Chief, Infrastructure Plans Division in the NETCOM G5.
Working at NETCOM proved to be a very exciting and rewarding career according to Garland.
“The great thing about working for the Network Enterprise Technology Command is technology is always changing so our solutions and capabilities for our network continue to change.”
“We’re allowed to share in leading edge technologies and experiences providing new solutions for our global enterprise,” emphasized Garland.
“Learning [about] these emerging technologies brings opportunities to meet different Department of Defense (DoD) teammates and new industry partners. Although I’ve essentially been in the same area supporting NETCOM for 27 years, it’s remained exciting as we find new ways to support Army customers,” said Garland.
Experiencing the thrill of new technologies as well as sharing her knowledge with others was only a portion of a rewarding career because Garland always managed to enjoy her work and make her time at NETCOM a memorable one.
“I absolutely enjoyed traveling to meet with our Signal Theater [Commands] or Signal Brigades to better understand their requirements, so that we can find ways to standardize, yet still support our customers and soldiers across the enterprise,” said Garland.
“Other equally memorable events, include walking through the Headquarters at Christmas time in years past when everyone had their doors decorated for the holidays and enjoying the Greely Hall Buffet, while children from the [Army] post [Fort Huachuca] schools and choirs were singing in the halls,” said Garland
“Each experience very different, but how I will remember my time at NETCOM; hard work topped with a bit of fun.”
At the conclusion of Garland’s retirement ceremony last week, friends, family and coworkers from NETCOM immediately posted their well wishes on social media to express their gratitude and congratulations.
“Awesome! Enjoy your well-deserved retirement. Thank you for your decades of service to our Army and our Nation,” said Jeremy Vigna, Fort Gordon, Chief, Network Enterprise Center (NEC).
“Congratulations Jeanna. Well-deserved and thank you for your service to NETCOM, the Army and the nation,” Maj. Gen. Chris Eubank, NETCOM (incoming) Commanding General.
As Garland leaves NETCOM, she reflected on some of the command’s accomplishments along with her personal contributions.
“I can only add that working for NETCOM has been one of the most enriching experiences of a life time.”
“Some of the solutions this Command has lead and I have been privileged to support includes the Circuit Bundling Initiative, Top Level Architecture, Enterprise Protected Domain Name System, Security Information Management System, Systems Management, Network Management, Joint Enterprise Network, Network Modernization, which included Joint Regional Security System, Installation Campus Area Network Modernization and SIPRNet Modernization,” said Garland.
“I’m excited to see what the team has planned for the future.”
Garland like others before her, plans to make the best of her retirement, this includes spending time with the newest addition to her family, her grandchild.
“I’m so excited to spend more time with my granddaughter. She’s 15 months old and so much fun to be around.”
“I’m also looking forward to working on a few overdue house projects, catching up with friends where time was a challenge before, as well as finding a healthy exercise routine,” said Garland.
