FORT HOOD, Texas - Fort Hood Family Housing, a Lendlease privatized military housing community, unveiled a recently-renovated home in the Comanche III family housing area here, Nov. 9, one of more than 1,300 homes that are planned to receive interior renovations throughout Comanche II, Comanche III and Montague Village.
“The much-anticipated interior renovations were designed with our residents in mind,” Chris Albus, project director of FHFH, said. “Not only will they enhance the look and feel of our community, but also ensure we are meeting the needs of service members and their families today and in the future.”
The modern renovations included the replacement of interior and exterior doors and trim, fresh two-tone paint, new vinyl plank floors, new lighting fixtures and plumbing fixtures with water conservation benefits. Kitchen upgrades include granite countertops, new cabinets with extra pantry space, and Energy Star® stainless steel appliances. The home also includes a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit, designed for comfort and improved air quality.
“These are nice. I lived in on-post housing for about 15 of my 20 years (in the Army), retired Maj. Jack Fullerton, vice-president of the Fort Hood Resident Advisory Board, said. “This is nicer than anything I ever lived in and anything I saw at any of the posts I was at. This, to me, is quality housing.”
Each home takes approximately one month to complete. Albus said to cause as little disruption as possible to residents, they are renovating homes as they become vacant. They are currently working on 64 renovations. All 1,300 homes are expected to be complete in 2026.
In his remarks before the official ribbon cutting, Albus thanked Col. Chad R. Foster and Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Ladd, U.S. Army Garrison – Fort Hood command team, for their support during the process. Leaders were then invited to take a tour of the three bedroom, two and a half bath home.
“These renovations really improve, not just the aesthetics of the house, but the overall quality and durability of the homes these families are going to live in,” Foster said about the renovations. “Soldiers and families live here and work here and they carry a heavy load for our country every day. What we owe them is the ability to come home and have a nice place to relax, a nice place to sleep and a nice place to raise their kids.”
The renovation process is part of a $420 million investment in Fort Hood Family Housing that Lendlease Communities announced in April. After water and sewer replacements are complete, they will begin demolition and subsequent construction of nearly 600 new junior enlisted homes in Chaffee Village, expected to begin in January 2022. These homes will be certified to the rigorous Energy Star for Homes label, as well as built to LEED Silver standards. Along with that, more than 2,500 roofs will be replaced in the Comanche I, Comanche II, Comanche III, Montague Village, Venable Village, Kouma Village, Patton Park and Wainwright Heights communities. Albus said he is excited to see how happy the residents will be when they see the upgrades. As a retired Soldier himself, the FHFH project director said he lived in housing and knows firsthand how important these improvements are to the quality of life of the Soldiers on Fort Hood.
“It’s making the living experience better for our residents,” Albus added. “That’s what I think the goal is for all of us here on Fort Hood – making it truly a Great Place to live.”
