Brigadier General Matthew P. Easley became the Director for Cybersecurity and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) in the office of the Army Chief Information Officer (CIO) in September 2020. In this role, BG Easley will oversee policy development to secure Army data and information, regardless of where it resides, in an environment resistant to known and emerging cyber threats, aligned with the Department of Defense directives. Additionally, he will represent the Army position on proposals initiated by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff, or other high-level forums, based on expert knowledge in the full range of cybersecurity policy matters.

BG Easley’s prior command and operational assignments include Director, Artificial Intelligence Task Force, Army Futures Command, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Deputy Commanding General – Cyber, 335th Signal Command (Theater), East Point, Georgia; Chief of Staff, 335th Signal Command (Theater) (Provisional), Camp Arifjan, Kuwait; Commander, 505th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade, Las Vegas, Nevada; Commander, 319th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Camp Buehring, Kuwait; Instructor for Command and General Staff College; and company-grade positions in the 121st Signal Battalion at Ft Riley (1ID) and in the 32nd Signal Battalion in Germany (V Corps).

His military education includes the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, the Joint and Coalitional Warfighting School, and the Army War College.

BG Easley received his commission upon graduation from the U.S. Military Academy, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Engineering Physics. He also holds master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University, Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder, and Strategic Studies from the Army War College, and a doctorate degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Colorado Boulder.

BG Easley’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with seven Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), and the Parachutist Badge. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) and is a member of the Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics), Eta Kappa Tau (Engineering and Technology), Phi Kappa Phi (Academic) and Sigma Xi (Research) academic honor societies. He is also a volunteer program evaluator for ABET to accredit electrical, computer and systems engineering programs.
