Lt. Col. Michael E. Gates assumed command of U.S. Army Garrison Fort A.P. Hill from Lt. Col. Andrew Q. Jordan during a Change of Command and Change of Responsibility Ceremony conducted at the Ambrose Fitness Facility, Fort A.P. Hill, Va., June 22, 2018.

"From my first visit here to train as a young captain and subsequent visits over the years, I have been able to witness firsthand the exceptional resources and outstanding professionalism of the Fort A.P. Hill staff," said Gates. "I am humbled to have the privilege of joining this outstanding organization and we look forward to being an active part of our local community."

Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph E. Reilly also assumed responsibility for the garrison from Command Sgt. Maj. Robert L. Parker II during the ceremony.

Davis D. Tindoll Jr., Director IMCOM Sustainment, U.S. Army Installation Management Command hosted the ceremony.

"Lt. Col. Gates and Command Sgt. Maj. Rilley bring extensive experience to their new position. They both have a special operations background with operational and tactical experience. They are both subject matter experts in the art and science of leadership," said Tindoll. "I am confident you will bring new energy and excellence to this installation."

Fort A.P. Hill was established as an Army training facility on June 11, 1941. Today, Fort A.P. Hill is a training and maneuver center focused on providing realistic joint and combined arms training. All branches of the Armed Forces train at the installation.

Fort A.P. Hill is one of the garrisons under the U.S. Army Military District of Washington.
