The Department of Defense is implementing the Blended Retirement System starting January 1, 2018. Active duty Soldiers with less than 12 years of active duty service, and Reserve Component Soldiers with less than 4,320 retirement points as of 31 December 2017 will have all of 2018 to decide to opt into the new system. There is an opt-in course that those within the eligibility window must complete by December 31, 2017 in order to make the most informed decision. All Service members who enter the military on or after January 1, 2018, will automatically be enrolled in the Blended Retirement System.

In addition to these courses, Service Members eligible to opt-in can also use the MyArmyBenefits Retirement Calculator to compare what their retired pay would look like under the High-3 Retired Pay Plan versus the new Blended Retirement System. The benefit of using the MyArmyBenefits Calculator is that it is CAC enabled, and pulls all your information in for you, including your Date Initially Entered Military Service (DIEMS), Pay Entry Base Date (PEBD), and Basic Active Service Date (BASD).

If you've never used MyArmyBenefits before, it has a lot of features for Soldiers, including deployment and Survivor Benefit Plan calculators, state and federal benefit fact sheets, and a resource locator plus a Help Desk to answer your benefits questions.
