WIESBADEN, Germany -- The Enterprise SATCOM Gateway-Landstuhl (ESG-L), 102nd Strategic Signal Battalion, 2nd Theater Signal Brigade, was recently named the Defense Information Systems Agency Europe 2016 European Gateway Facility of the Year in the Large Gateway category.

U.S. Army Col. Andrew McClelland, DISA Europe commander, presented the award to Lt. Col. Ernest Tornabell IV, commander of the 102nd Strategic Signal Bn., Aug. 3, 2017, in front of the battalion's headquarters building in Wiesbaden.

Some of the unit's accomplishments in 2016 include supporting 340 major operations and 232 theater-level exercises; and supporting 37 National Airborne Operations Command (NAOC) missions, four of which were in direct support to the President of the United States.

Part of the U.S. Army Signal Activity Kaiserslautern (USASA-K), 102nd Strategic Signal Bn., the ESG-L is the largest Army-operated SATCOM facility outside the continental U.S and provides warfighters on the ground, air and sea, as well as other Department of Defense and U.S. Government agencies, with internet services via satellite anywhere on five continents and three oceans.

Tornabell said the award represents a tremendous achievement for an amazing team of professionals.

"Being able to accomplish mission support for seven combatant commands while being undermanned is a true testament to their dedication, technical acumen and leadership engagement. Their mission load continues to increase without an increase in manning and they continually march forward providing world-class support," Tornabell said.
