FORT LEE, Va. (July 27, 2017) -- Summer is a great time to start healthy new habits and break the old.

Improve your health with steps so simple you'll barely notice the effort.

• Get outside. The onset of summer means more sunshine and beautiful weather. The body's exposure to sunlight triggers production of Vitamin D, which is vital for building strong bones. Studies also suggest that exposure to sunshine can help to reverse seasonal affective disorder. So, put on those sunglasses and soak up some rays.

• Explore local farmer's markets. Summer is the perfect time to seek out fresh produce from your local farmers market. In Virginia, this time of year is the season for produce such as blackberries, blueberries, cucumbers, green beans and strawberries. Help support your local farmers and increase your stock of fruits and vegetables.

Clean your way to less stress. Not only can spring and summer cleaning help to increase physical activity, it can also serve to relax your brain. Deep breathing and mindful meditation are two techniques that are used to lower stress levels and can be practiced while you are cleaning your house.

• Replace old tennis shoes. Studies have shown that the lifespan of running shoes ranges between 350-550 miles. Changing your tennis shoes regularly can prevent poor form and reduce your risk of injury. Pain in the ankles, shins, and legs can be a sign indicative of reduced shock absorption from worn tennis shoes.

• Amp up your activity. The season of warm weather brings with it endless possibilities to increase your physical activity. Take advantage of the daylight by encouraging a family bike ride. Do some gardening or yard work. Explore local festivals or new hiking trails. Take a walk on your lunch break. Whatever your passion may be, get out there and get moving!

• Visit the installation Army Wellness Center. Your team at the Army Wellness Center can help you to gather a baseline health assessment, and help you to develop a plan based upon your wellness goals. Start this warmer weather off with a healthier you!
