Mustangs advance to 2017 Gainey Cup competition

FORT STEWART, Ga. - 3rd Infantry Division scouts competed in this year's division level Gainey Cup selection process March 27-30 at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Of the four squads that competed, only one could advance to the 2017 Gainey Cup Best Scout Squad competition to fight for the title as the U.S. Army's "Best Scout Squad."

The Soldiers were evaluated on a medical lane, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attack lane and were tested on area and route reconnaissance. They also performed night land navigation operations, a stress shoot and completed two obstacle courses.

Two squads with 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID, a squad with 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 2nd IBCT, 3rd ID, and a squad with 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID, competed for the division title.

Calvary scouts with Alpha troop 6-8 Cav. took the win and earned the title as the division's "Best Scout Squad."

They are scheduled to represent 3rd ID at the 2017 Gainey Cup Best Scout Squad competition this May.
