Fort Knox, Ky. -- Soldiers from Fort Knox paid tribute to President Zachary Taylor at a wreath laying ceremony at the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, Ky., at 11 a.m. Nov. 23.
The Army is tasked with ensuring all former U.S. presidents receive a wreath - provided by the White House - at their gravesite each year on their anniversary of their birth. Additionally, a general officer must perform this duty.
Brig. Gen. Michael Dillard, commanding general of the 78th Training Division -- part of the 84th Training Command here -- hosted this year's ceremony, and a Fort Knox honor guard from the command assisted with the wreath laying.
Taylor, the nation's 12th president, grew up in Louisville before joining the Army in 1808. He was sworn into office in 1849 and served as president for 16 months before his death in 1850.
