FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 15, 2016) -- The 2016 Commanders Cup season is approaching its halfway point.

The Commanders Cup Program is a curriculum of sporting events for Soldiers on Fort Benning who want to participate in recreational activities such as hockey, basketball, softball, volleyball and golf.

"The program provides morale support for the Soldiers. It is a good way for Families to support each other. Children see their mother or father work collectively with others outside of work," said Willie Spann, sports coordinator for the Commanders Cup Program.

Teams can be formed from any unit on Fort Benning and different seasons run throughout the year. The beginning of the year starts off with basketball, followed by soccer, softball and volleyball.

The duration for each season depends on the number of teams signed up. Each unit chooses its own primary and alternate coach and brings their own equipment.

According to Spann, points are awarded for teams that participate and teams who do well in their games throughout each season of sports. Teams that win at least half of their games will go on to compete in the championship of the particular sport. The unit that amasses the most points from all the different sports gets a Commanders Cup banner hung up in Smith Gym for their unit.

Units can also have more than one team.

"If a unit has two teams they must be checked into a player roster. This is so that a person cannot switch teams if their team within the unit is performing worse than another team for the season," said Spann.

Softball games are generally played at Gowdy Stadium and Engineer Field.

"The number of teams depends on where we will play," added Spann.

Currently there are 14 teams signed up for the Commanders Cup Program. The softball season has just begun, but it is not too late to sign up and construct a team for a unit.

"I try to get a unit in whenever I can," said Spann. "As long as the unit doesn't try to join halfway into the season, it is possible for me to fit them in. However, a unit that joins late may have a series of late games in the beginning. Units still have time to sign up."
