FORT LEE, Va. (March 24, 2016) -- A mammogram is an important step in taking care of one's overall health. The screenings use X-rays to examine the breast, which aids in the early detection of cancer or other abnormalities.
Are mammograms effective?
According to the American College of Radiology, mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality in the U.S. by nearly a third since the early 1990s. Annual mammograms can detect cancer early -- when it is most treatable. In fact, mammograms show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel lumps or abnormalities.
Mammograms also can prevent the need for extensive treatment for advanced cancers and improve chances of breast conservation. Current guidelines from ACR, the American Cancer Society and the Society for Breast Imaging recommend women receive annual mammograms starting at age 40 -- even if they have no symptoms or family history of breast cancer.
How do you get a mammogram?
The Kenner Army Health Clinic Radiology department is excited to offer patients new, fully digital mammography. With this equipment, the clinic can provide annual screenings for women and specialty screenings for men. To schedule an exam, follow these steps.
• Make an appointment with your primary care manager either at Kenner or an outside facility for a clinical exam.
• Kenner providers will place an order in the system. Women can then come into the radiology department or call to schedule an appointment.
• If you see an outside provider, that clinic or office will need to provide you with a doctor's order to bring into radiology so the exam can be scheduled.
