Taking steps to goal setting

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 7, 2015) -- The Health Promotion Program at the Maneuver Center of Excellence kicked off its Health and Wellness Lunch and Learn series Sept. 29 with an hourlong discussion about goal setting and the importance of having health-related goals.

"We thought goal setting would be a great topic to kick off the whole lunch and learn series because the whole point of the 'Don't Sit, Get Fit!' campaign is to promote health and wellness," said Else Seifu, Health Promotion Program officer at the MCoE. "Whether you are extremely physically, emotionally, or spiritually fit, everybody has room to grow and everybody has a goal they are trying to achieve."

The event was led by Lisa Hutchison, performance expert with the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness.

"We wanted to incorporate CSF2 because it's an entity we have on post that everyone can use," said Suzanne Burbelo, Health Promotion Program assistant. "And, we wanted people to know they have access to that help."

"Goal setting establishes a clear path that helps you get from where you are to where you want to be," Hutchison said.

Hutchinson said health and fitness goals often require lifestyle changes, which can be difficult because old habits die hard. She encouraged those present not to be afraid of goals, and to set small attainable ones as building blocks to lifestyle change.

"An important part of the goal-setting process is addressing the obstacles that may get in the way and plan for them. For example, holidays are coming and you have a choice - take the 'wait and see' approach, hoping you can stay on track when presented with temptation, or plan ahead for those food-centered holidays to stay on track with your health goals."

The next "Lunch and Learn" seminar will take place from noon-12:30 p.m. Oct. 13 in Room W105 at McGinnis-Wickam Hall. The topic will be workplace ergonomics, and the seminar will be taught by Tony Price, an exercise physiologist at Martin Army Community Hospital.
