U.S. Army and Swiss aviators sprung into action on the evening on Aug. 29 in order to fight an outbreak of fires in a forest on Oshijak mountain, roughly 6 kilometers southeast of Prizren in southern Kosovo.
Working together to protect lives and property in the area, the aviators dropped more than 47,000 gallons of water on the flames, taken from a nearby lake. As helicopters carried water in bambi buckets toward the fire, a command and control helicopter hovered above the action to direct routes, track the flames, and identify water sources.
The area affected by the fires is impossible to reach by vehicle, and the request for emergency support was directed to Kosovo Force leaders by Kosovo's local emergency services.
The U.S. Army aviation team deployed in support of Multinational Battle Group-East-made up of U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers from California, Connecticut and Florida-continued their support the quell the flames into the day of Aug. 30. They have now returned to their primary mission: availability to move KFOR troops and support safety, security and freedom of movement in Kosovo.
