VILSECK, Germany -- The Bavaria Medical Department Activity made history recently when all six of its clinics were officially recommended for the coveted title of Star Strong Sites in safety. This achievement proves the commands' dedication to safe working practices and made BMEDDAC, at that time, the first and only unit in MEDCOM with all of its facilities certified.

BMEDDAC's Clinics in Vilseck, Hohenfels, Grafenwoehr, Katterbach, Illesheim and Stuttgart underwent the intense assessments, with each clinic successfully earning the recommendation for the title. The overall assessment is a process that normally takes up to three years to complete.

"This shows how much time and energy were invested into the safety program, without sacrificing patient care," said Thomas Zirkelbach, Safety Manager for BMEDDAC.

The focus of the assessment is on staff safety, HAZCOM, fire prevention and emergency management practices within each clinic. A total of 243 performance elements, reflecting OSHA standards, pertaining to these elements are measured. Each standard must not only be met, but exceeded.

According to Zirkelbach, there are 132 applicants worldwide for this title. Of those who have earned the title, BMEDDAC had the first, the Illesheim Army Health Clinic in 2012, followed by all five remaining BMEDDAC health clinics.

The assessments consisted of document reviews, walk-throughs, and formal and informal staff interviews.

Since the assessment included three stages and took more than two years, the safety team said it is important to note this is not a one-time deal.

"We will be re-assessed every three years," said Zirkelbach. "This is a high-level recognition award. Many garrisons are now attempting to become star sites. This will eventually be Army-wide. This is not something we can just do with a two-hour training session. They had to meet the standards for years and continue to prove they are meeting it over time. We are very proud to have earned this recognition."
