INDEPENDENCE DAY
HOLIDAY SAFETY MESSAGE
This Independence Day, we will celebrate the 239th year since the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence- the document that separated the American colonies from British rule and led to the creation of a new federal republic and the birth of our great Nation, the United States of America. Our founding fathers demonstrated remarkable courage and tenacity to fight for what they knew would be America's destiny- a country founded on the ideal of liberty, freedom and democracy for all of its people. But freedom is never free. Today, men and women of our Armed Forces continue to stand ready, and proudly defend our freedom here and for others throughout the world. On our Nation's birthday, let us honor their service and commit ourselves to be worthy of their tremendous sacrifices.
Safety remains our top priority. This holiday weekend affords the opportunity to travel to favorite recreation areas, visit relatives or attend patriotic demonstrations. I stress the importance of using seat belts, not speeding and not driving while fatigued or intoxicated. As you begin to execute your travel plans, I encourage Commanders and leaders at every level to ensure Soldiers and Civilians are briefed on the major safety concerns associated with this holiday. The upcoming holiday is an ideal time to become familiar with and use the Travel Risk Planning System (TRiPS) at https://trips.safety.army.mil/ (CAC/PIV required). The tool helps to reduce or eliminate the chance of an accident occurring while traveling during the holiday season.
Fireworks, parades, picnics and recreational activities shared with family and friends all make the Fourth of July one of the most enjoyable holidays of the year. Unfortunately, based on past history, predictions are that someone will have an accident during the weekend. The highest numbers of injuries usually occur in automobile, boating, swimming and fireworks mishandling. Risks are elevated when alcohol consumption is involved. I urge you to plan carefully, exercise sound judgment and prudence, and keep safety a priority at all times. If your holiday plans include the water, please ensure you follow the appropriate rules of boating and always wear a flotation device. At the beach, be especially mindful of rip currents. If you get caught, don't panic; swim parallel to the shore until free. Summer means fun in the sun! Please be safe and don't let a heat-related illness ruin your day- take preventive measures for sunburn and heat injury.
Thank you for your continued commitment to our Army and the AMC Mission. Please enjoy the 4th of July weekend and festivities. My family joins me in extending our heartfelt wishes to all of you for a safe and happy celebration.
AMC SAFE IS ARMY STRONG!
