FORT LEAVENWORTH, KS -- The Defense Health Board conducted its quarterly meeting at Fort Leavenworth's Arnold Conference Room in the Lewis and Clark Center May 12-13. Each quarter the board conducts an open forum to publicly deliberate current taskings and receive information briefings.

The Defense Health Board is a Federal Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Defense that provides independent advice and recommendations on matters relating to operational programs, health policy development, health research programs, and requirements for the treatment and prevention of disease and injury, promotion of health and the delivery of health care to Department of Defense beneficiaries.

The mission of the DHB is to provide independent authoritative advice to maximize the health, safety, and effectiveness of the United States Armed Forces.

Some of the topics discussed by the board included partnerships with academia, accreditation for enlisted medical skills, and the standardization of curricula within the services.

Lt. Gen. Douglas Robb, the director of the Defense Health Agency and a key recipient of the health board findings, advocated the standardization of efforts for all DoD health care professionals within the services by creating set "Essential Medical Competencies" similar to the Army's Mission Essential Task Lists (METL). "It is key that we have all of the domains of health care working together," said Robb.

In addition to the agenda topics discussed, the DHB members also received a series of informative briefings about the roles and missions of many of the organizations assigned to CAC and Fort Leavenworth and initiatives such as the Army University and the Human Dimension efforts within the Army.
