FORT KNOX, Kentucky - U. S. Army Human Resources Command provided community support to the St. Catherine College 4th Annual Military Appreciation 5K walk/run in Bardstown, Kentucky, April 18.
Brig. Gen. Barbara L. Owens, HRC Deputy Commanding General, provided remarks at the start of the race and assisted in presenting medals to the winners at the end of the event.
She expressed her appreciation to all the race participants and their sincere desire to give back to the veteran community.
St. Catherine College is a liberal arts college founded in 1931. The annual military appreciation run is "a keystone event for the college," said Crystal Brady, a senior at the school.
This year's theme for the event was "2015 - The Year of the Kentucky Woman Veteran," and a portion of the profits from the run were dedicated to the women veterans residing in the Thomas-Hood Veterans Center.
The Thomas-Hood Veterans Center is the largest long-term care facility operated by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs. The center accepts residents from all branches of the Armed Forces and has hosted more than 2,700 residents since admitting its first resident in 1991.
Capt. Rene Zubik, Aide-de-Camp to the Deputy Commanding General, HRC, was one of more than 100 people who participated in the race to support female veterans.
Zubik said she was grateful for the opportunity to not only participate in the race, but to speak to some of the veterans from the Thomas-Hood Veterans Center as well.
"It was an excellent idea to have the run to support the ladies," said Zubik. "We, as a nation, need to support these ladies, and the entire veteran population in general. They paved the way for the rest of us."
