REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Mar. 24, 2015) -- Two weeks after completing an American Red Cross class a Redstone Arsenal employee put his newly-learned skills to work, earning him national recognition.
Robert Bradley, an Electronics Engineer at the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center, was presented the American Red Cross National Certificate of Merit Mar. 20 at the Huntsville Chapter of the American Red Cross. Bradley, along with two other Merit recipients, Patrick Street and Christian Boyer, resuscitated a fellow referee at the Merrimack Soccer Complex late last year.
"Our mission is to help people be prepared and have the ability to save a life so it is a pleasure to be here to celebrate second chances. That's what we are all about," said American Red Cross Health and Safety Service Delivery Manager, Susan Sparks. "The interesting thing is Mr. Bradley attend a CPR class about two weeks prior to the incident. Many times, it's being in the right place at the right time and having the right skills."
Bradley attended the AMRDEC-sponsored American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED training for Lay Responders class held Oct. 15, 2014.
Two weeks later, on Nov. 1, 2014, a referee collapsed in the park meeting room between soccer games. When the gentleman fell unconscious, Bradley and Streeter rushed to the victim's aid immediately.
While a bystander dialed 9-1-1, Bradley began CPR and asked fellow referee Boyer to retrieve an AED. While Bradley and Streeter continued to administer CPR, Boyer applied the pads to the victim. The AED administered one shock and the victim resumed breathing. The AED did not advise any further shocks and the men continued to perform CPR until EMS arrived and continued to provide care. The victim was then transported to a nearby hospital where he received further care.
"I am honored to receive the award," Bradley said. "The most important thing I learned from the experience is to give your undivided attention to the instructor and take the on-hands instruction and practice very seriously. Everything our instructor told us and showed us was applied during the life saving event."
The Certificate of Merit is the highest award given by the American Red Cross to an individual or team of individuals who saves or sustains a life by using skills and knowledge learned in an American Red Cross Health and Safety Services course. The certificate bears the signature of the President of the United States, who is the honorary chairman of the American Red Cross, as well as the signature of the chairman of the American Red Cross.
According to his citation paperwork, this action is exemplary of the highest degree of concern of one human being for another who is in distress.
AMRDEC offers American Red Cross Adult First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training for Lay Responders classes throughout the year. AMRDEC employees are encouraged to review the training schedule posted within the Knowledge Center.
Bradley encourages his fellow employees to attend the significant training. "Please take the CPR/AED/First Aid course. You could save someone's life."
