FORT SILL, Okla. (May 30, 2013) -- This summer, as you step into the warm breeze of Oklahoma, you'll find yourself with a decision to make. Will we go swimming today? How about a hike? The kids really want to take a bike ride. Whether your goal is to lose weight and get in shape or just have fun with the family, Lawton and Fort Sill have many fitness options for you to choose from.
One fitness option is a paved, three-mile trail located near Buffalo Soldiers Acres on Fort Sill. This trail provides the perfect place for running, walking, riding a bike, skating or taking your dog for a walk.
If your goal this summer is to be more active and get in shape, your exercise regimen does not have to be in one long block of time. You can break it up into 10-minute sessions throughout the day. According to Claudia Mejia, Rinehart Fitness Center manager and Garrison Fitness coordinator, by breaking up your work, you can fit it into your schedule no matter how busy your day.
"Ten to 15 minutes of exercise can make a big difference," said Mejia.
Taking your kids to one of the many playgrounds in the area is another option. The kids can enjoy outdoor fun and run off some of that summer energy.
On Fort Sill there are many playgrounds to choose from including an all access one located at the Graham Resiliency Training Campus. One of the biggest playgrounds in town is Kid Zone playground located on the corner of 38th Street and Meadowbrook Road.
Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area is also a fun option for families. On the beach you can enjoy swimming, sand volleyball and relaxing in the sun. There is also mini-golf, a waterslide, and canoe and paddle boat rentals.
Preparing foods that are easy to take with you is one solution for eating better while on the go this summer. Mejia suggests, "making 100 calorie snacks by portioning out your favorite food in bags according to the package serving size."
The outdoor swimming pools on Fort Sill are yet another fitness option available. Check out Fort Sill's newest pool in the Southern Plains Community Center on Geronimo Road.
Also, there is a spray park at the corner of Fort Sill Boulevard and King Road.
If hiking and exploring nature is your style, there is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. They have many trails for all ages and abilities. Be aware of which trail you choose and pay attention so you will know how to get back to your vehicle safely. The refuge also offers picnicking, fishing and watching the wildlife.
When the weather becomes too hot, there are many indoor fitness options as well. Rinehart Fitness Center offers exercise classes from Latin dance exercise to interval and strength training and everything in between. Children are welcome to participate in class, with their parent's supervision, Mejia said.
So whether you take a relaxing family walk or go to the pool for a swim, there are so many ways to enjoy fitness this summer and stay active.
