FORT BRAGG, N.C. - As the sound of polkas and waltzes filled the air, North Carolina's pine trees faded into the background as 148 people and 100 dogs started their 10-kilometer journey on Smith Lake's sandy trails during the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest Volksmarch Saturday.

Walkers received a souvenir mug after completing their journey and were able to enjoy a grilled bratwurst or knockwurst on authentic German brAfAPtchen (rolls), while listening to and dancing with the Bavarian Brass Band.

The Fort Bragg Vet Clinic was on hand, offering free pet examinations and treats as well as handing out free leashes, cat and dog food, key chains, measuring cups and other useful items to the many pet owners present at the event.

Volksmarchers of all ages participated, the youngest being 8-day old William Manigault, carried by his mother, Sgt. Victoria Manigault of the 21st Chemical Brigade. Five-year old Sarah Weisner ran down the first hill at the beginning of the course, stating that she was out there to "get some exercise."

This year's volksmarch was sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association and set the stage for the Fort Bragg Oktoberfest celebration at the Fort Bragg Fairgrounds, which runs through Nov. 1.
