Approximately 52 summer interns toured Picatinny Arsenal on July 31 to learn more about the installation, its workforce, and the professions that exist throughout the arsenal.

During the tour, the interns visited three of the arsenal's facilities: the Armaments Integration Facility, the Manufacturing Technology Center, and the Target Behavioral Response Laboratory (TBRL).

Students also received an overview of Picatinny Arsenal's largest organization, the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC). Information was also presented on the arsenal's gaming and interactive, technology, along with a briefing on the remote technologies at the Armaments Integration Facility.

"My favorite place was the Manufacturing Technology Center because you get to see how all the machines make weapons," said Rachel Hayes, a summer hire from the Weapons Software and Engineering Center.

At the Target Behavioral Lab, engineers demonstrated how the lab creates scenarios designed to test Soldier response and performance to further understand how humans react under different conditions.

Engineers also discussed their work with non-lethal weapons, mentioning one experiment that seeks to determine what best deters people from throwing rocks at vehicles (brute force, stunning light, or loud noises.)

"I liked watching the ARDEC video because you get to see everything that Picatinny does," said Tom Crowley, an intern who studies mechanical engineering and plans to attend New Jersey's Institute of Technology. "I didn't realize how high-tech everything is here. Like the video simulation here [at the TBRL], I didn't know that at all before. It's really cool."

The summer hire tour is offered to all interns working at Picatinny. Its goal is not only to provide interns with a general orientation but also information on the opportunities available at the arsenal and inspire the interns to apply for a Picatinny career after graduation.

The tour was organized through the Executive Fellows Office, which is under the director of the research and engineering center.
