The Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports Department is offering a Ladies Night Softball Series for women looking for an opportunity to play softball. The series is open to female Soldiers, DoD Civilians and dependents.
"The series seems pretty popular," said Brittany Beadle, event coordinator. "We had a good turnout at the July 7 ladies night and I see some new faces tonight (July 21)."
For Abigail Rember, July 21 was her first time playing in the series.. She and her husband, CPT Andrew Rember, just moved to Fort Benning a week ago.
"This (softball) is a good time," Rember said. "I thought it would be a good chance to meet new people."
Angelia Jackson, who has been at Fort Benning since 1982, said there used to be women's softball games on post in the 1990s, but faded away.
"I'm glad to see they offer something like this for Soldiers, dependents and civilians," said Jackson, a civilian with MEDDAC.
And the series is pretty competitive, she said.
The Hot Bats defeated the Babes July 21 at Gowdy Field. The Hot Bats' defense shut out the Babes, while scoring seven runs for the win.
"We were down one player so that was a challenge for the team, but we were still able to win," said Hot Bats coach and pitcher Kathryn Walker. "We didn't get a lot of action in the outfield, but we played strong defense (in the infield) to seal the win."
The remaining two ladies nights begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 and 18 at Gowdy Field. Teams will play two games each night. Registration isn't required. If you want to play, just show up. Every player is required to bring their own softball equipment.
