What is it?
The U.S. Army, while not a business, performs daily business functions equal in importance and scope to those of the largest global commercial enterprises. These business functions strive to obtain the most output at the least cost within the 12 Title 10 functions such as recruiting, training, and supplying.
The critical mission of the Office of Business Transformation (OBT) is to help the Army incorporate proven business practices in order to get the most from every dollar provided by the American taxpayers and Congress.
What has the Army done?
Army leaders have shared reading lists to enhance a sustained personal commitment to the critical study of the Army profession. The recommended “business” reading list, in combination with others, such as the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Professional Reading List, is intended to broaden each leader’s knowledge and understanding of the business perspective and opportunities faced as they lead the elements of the greater Army enterprise.
The Office of Business Transformation’s list has been created for all leaders to make a focused, personal commitment to read, reflect, and learn about the Army profession including through the lens of proven and relevant best business practices.
What efforts does the Army plan to continue in the future?
While the Army faces a multitude of challenges, these challenges provide extraordinary opportunities for growth when taken in whole. By broadening the Army’s perspective to enjoin business concepts, described by business thought leaders including former Service members, the Army can grow through these challenges and emerge stronger on the other side.
Why is this important to the Army?
While the appearance of a title on this reading list does not imply that the OBT Director endorses the author’s views or interpretations, these books contain thought-provoking ideas and viewpoints relevant to the Army.
