Monday June 16, 2014

What is it?

The U.S. Army celebrates 239 Years of Our Profession and continues to demonstrate its competence, commitment, and character. America's Army possesses a lifelong commitment to the Army values. Trust and respect is the foundation of the Army. Soldiers consistently uphold the Army values and adhere to the Army ethic.

An Army professional strives to adhere to five essential characteristics of trust, military expertise, honorable service, esprit de corps, and stewardship.

What has the Army done?

The Army as a profession plays a vital role partnering with the joint community and other government services that dedicate themselves to serving the nation. The Army Profession is a unique vocation of experts certified in the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land combat power, serving under civilian authority, and entrusted to defend the Constitution, the rights, and interests of the American people. The Army Profession is about working as a team and honoring its teammates.

For 239 years, Soldiers have embraced standards and discipline; customs and traditions; and military expertise and values, that have earned the nation's trust, while they have defended the Constitution and the rights and interests of the American people.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?

The Army will continue to play a vital role in the service to the nation. The Army Profession guides the pursuit of a noble calling and honorable service. Soldiers serve the interest of the nation and are morally committed by oath to protect America. They are also citizens committed to exemplifying the ideals espoused by the Army Ethic. The Army remains remarkably privileged to secure the freedom of the American people, while operating to prevent conflict, shape operational environments, and win the nation's wars.

Why is this important to the Army?

Commemorating the Army's birthday provides an opportunity to highlight its rich history, celebrate the victories with fellow Soldiers, and look toward the future of the nation. The Army recognizes its commitment to exceeding the standards set forth by the nation's leaders to remain visible and trusted examples of the Army Profession.
