Community members seeking assistance with personal computers should considering visiting Kamsys Computer Services, Inc. on 12th Street.
The shop repairs Apple brand and Microsoft-based personal computers, sells used desktops and laptops and custom builds computers. Soldiers, civilians and Family members living on and off post may use the service. Shop owner, Kamal Kawar, encourages community members to visit and receive a free estimate.
"I'm a one man operation," Kawar said. "I depend on word of mouth … people hear about me and come for service."
Kawar has been in the computer business for 35 years. He arrived at Fort Belvoir in 2009 after customers expressed a desire for his services on post.
"Customers told me, 'We need somebody like you to come to the post.' So I came in and I stayed, helping with Soldiers and the residents to fix and build computers and help with infections and viruses," Kawar said.
Kawar accepts walk-ins for customers with computer-related problems and questions. Kawar will examine the computer free of charge and provide an exact cost for his services. Customers can use this pricing information and advice from Kawar to determine if they want to have the computer fixed or purchase a new computer.
If a customer decides to let Kawar fix the computer, the device is usually fixed within a week.
"When a computer comes in, for example with infections, I like to keep it for two days to run it to make sure everything is okay," Kawar said. "With my experience I just look at the problem and know how to fix it."
In addition to fixing viruses, Kawar recovers lost data, replaces motherboards and restores computers. He is also very proud of his custom-built computers designed for the office, home and video game players. Kawar said he places top of the line parts into the computers he builds which makes the devices very powerful. His computers are upgradable as customers can start with basic components such as four gigabytes of memory and increase to 32 gigabytes based on their needs.
"The components I put into computers comes from the experience of 35 years in business and I give my customers a two-year warranty," Kawar said. "I custom build the best because I can't afford people lining up to come back for service. When I build a computer, I don't see the customer for at least a year. When they come back they just want to upgrade or have a question answered."
The computer shop is open Monday -- Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., on Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday.
