Maj. Erin Stibral, the clinic officer in charge, said the new clinic location is a vast improvement over its previous location at Pope Field.
"We're very excited," Stibral said. "The facilities are beautiful and we're getting a lot of new medical equipment so it should be better for us and the patients."
Stibral, a native of Scotland, S.D., said the new clinic is double the size of the old one.
According to a May 12, 2011, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District press release, Korte Construction of St. Louis, was awarded the $15.3 million contract to construct the 50,000 square foot clinic, located at the corner of Knox and Woodruff streets.
Stibral said the new facility would provide outpatient medical care for active-duty servicemembers and their Families, as well as retirees. Services will include primary care, optometry, laboratory services, pharmacy, radiology, physical therapy and pediatrics.
"This is built to code where you have more space in the hallways, more space in the exam rooms and then of course, expanded services that we didn't have before," said Tim Sciandra, clinic administrator.
"It's just the extra state of the art services we're going to be able to bring," said Sciandra, a Buffalo, N.Y. native. "The whole patient flow is going to be a lot smoother, a lot quicker."
Stibral thanked everyone for being patient during the transition to the new clinic.
"We closed Pope last week and we're not going to open up this one for another week, so thanks for being patient … and understanding as we get ready to move into the new building."
Stibral said there would be ribbon-cutting Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. and clinic staff would officially welcome patients Feb. 4, at 7:30 a.m.
Once completed, the Army Corps of Engineers release said the clinic would seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, Silver certification, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards.
