Vicksburg, Ms... The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Vicksburg District (Corps) senior leaders and archaeologists met yesterday with the Tribal historic preservation officers from the Alabama Coushatta Tribe Of Texas, Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Jena Band of Choctaw Indians, Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and Muscogee (Creek) Nation to discuss the identification and protection of archaeological sites on Corps lands.

The Corps goal is to improve and streamline tribal consultation, improve the required environmental/cultural review processes and eliminate potential impacts to sensitive areas resulting from civil construction projects.

The discussion led to several creative actions and ideas that would improve development of historic property management plans, procedures for accidental discovery of archaeological remains and research designs for excavation of archaeological sites on Corp's projects.

The Vicksburg District continues to successfully partner with sovereign nations on proposed civil works projects to ensure the protection of archaeological sites.

The Corps of Engineers in the nation's oldest and largest water resources development agency and partners with organizations across the nation to indentify and meet America's water recourse challenges for the 21st century.
