ORLANDO, Fla. -- Miss North Carolina, Arlie Honeycutt, was a special guest at a Yellow Ribbon Reintegration event in Orlando on August 11. Although there were several units from different states, the 805th Military Police Company out of Cary, N.C., comprised a large chunk of the attendees.
Besides posing for photos with Soldiers and their families, Honeycutt also spent some time with the military children while their parents were in their sessions.
The first group was aged from about four to six years old and she read a couple stories to them, namely, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Elmer the Patchwork Elephant." While she read the second selection she passed around a stuffed Elmer toy for the kids to see. After the reading, kids got to get their pictures taken with "the princess" as some referred to her due to her crown and scepter.
An older group of children was assembled and they got to ask questions about the Miss America organization and what it means to be Miss North Carolina.
"I thought it was an absolutely fantastic event today," Honeycutt said. "It was so exciting to get to know so many of our service members, to get to interact with their kids and their families." YRRP is an event that Honeycutt would not necessarily have known of had she not been invited in her official capacity, but she was very happy to have the chance to participate in the event.
"I'm so, so thrilled and honored that I got to be a part of it," she said. "I think it's really great that the military is working to make sure that [the Soldiers] transition back home runs as smoothly as is humanly possible."
