ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- The 414th Transportation Company and 414th Chemical Company will have a new home next year in Orangeburg S.C. The official ground breaking ceremony was held on August 4 at the new site of 37, 992 square foot training facility on 15 acres of land.
The 81st Regional Support Command, based at Fort Jackson, S.C., hosted the groundbreaking ceremony, which brought representatives from throughout the Orangeburg community and the Army Reserve.
Maj. Gen. Gill P. Beck Commander of the 81st RSC welcomed the guests during a day that marked not just the beginning of the construction project but the development of a long lasting friendship. "Today involves the commitment of our nation, our Army, our Army Reserve and the citizens of this area," said Beck. "A commitment that is essential to our nation."
South Carolina's Senator John Mathews surprised the community by attending the ground breaking ceremony thanking the troops for scarifies that they make. "When the Army calls, I always listen," said Mathews. "I understand the role and the responsibility the Army plays all of us are safer and in a better place because of your serve."
This new facility will give the unit the ability to house not just the Soldiers but the unit's large amount of equipment as well, something they are unable to do in the current Orangeburg building. "The old facility has served its purpose," said Staff Sgt. Albert Banks, Motor Transport Operator for the 414th Transportation Company. "I am thrilled for future soldiers that will come to this facility and serve our great nation," he said. "As an 88M, space is what you need for your trucks and trailers and now they finally got it.
As the artist rendering of the new facility was unveiled, several members of the 414th Transportation and Chemical Company who attended the ceremony and were looking forward to moving into their new home. "As I looked at the future of the new facility for the 414 Trans and Chemical Co it's been a long time coming," said Banks. "This is so awesome."
